US Mpox Update: Outbreak Hits Fort Dodge Correctional Facility
What is Mpox?
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a rare but potentially serious viral infection that can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, and a characteristic rash.
The virus is spread through close contact with an infected person or animal, or through contact with contaminated materials.
Outbreak at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility
In July 2023, an outbreak of mpox was reported at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility in Iowa. As of August 10, 2023, there have been 21 confirmed cases of mpox among inmates and staff.
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is working to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the virus.
Symptoms of Mpox
The symptoms of mpox can vary, but typically include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Fatigue
- A characteristic rash that can appear anywhere on the body
Treatment for Mpox
There is no specific treatment for mpox, but the symptoms can be managed with supportive care. Antiviral medications may be used to shorten the course of the illness.
Prevention of Mpox
There are several things you can do to prevent mpox, including:
- Avoiding contact with people who are sick
- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoiding contact with wild animals
- Getting vaccinated
