School Children at Risk: Over 13,000 Missed MenACWY Vaccination

Unvaccinated Students Exposed to Potential Illness

Approximately 13 of new students missed their free MenACWY vaccine in school and remain vulnerable to the potentially deadly disease. MenACWY, or meningococcal disease, is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis, a serious infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and sepsis, a life-threatening infection of the bloodstream.

Missed Vaccines Pose Health Risks

Meningococcal disease is particularly dangerous for young children and adolescents, who are more likely to get it than other age groups. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing MenACWY, and missing out on this crucial immunization puts students at unnecessary risk.

Parents and caregivers are urged to ensure their children are up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations, including the MenACWY vaccine. Check with your healthcare provider or local health department to schedule a vaccination appointment if your child has missed their school-based immunization.
