Ukrainian War Casualty Estimates Nearing 500,000
Ukrainian Losses
As of late July, Ukrainian daily losses fell to around 30 killed and about 250 wounded. However, as of 25 February 2024, Ukraine confirmed that 31,000 of its soldiers had been killed.
Russian Losses
The exact number of Russian casualties is unknown but is estimated to be similar to that of Ukraine. In August, US officials put the number of Russian soldiers killed at 70,000 and as many as 120,000 injured.
Civilian Casualties
The Ukrainian civilian casualty toll is also significant. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as of 15 November 2022, there have been 16,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 6,329 killed and 9,671 injured.
The total number of Ukrainian and Russian troops killed or wounded since the war in Ukraine began 18 months ago is nearing 500,000. This staggering number underscores the human cost of this ongoing conflict.
