14-man Northampton shock Munster to maintain 100 per cent Champions Cup record
Northampton Saints produced a remarkable defensive display to beat Munster 15-13 in the Heineken Champions Cup on Saturday, despite playing the final 20 minutes with 14 men.
The Saints had hooker Sam Matavesi sent off for a dangerous clear-out in the 59th minute, but they held on for a famous victory in Limerick.
Northampton had taken an early lead through Alex Mitchell's try, but Munster hit back with a penalty try and a score from Gavin Coombes to lead 13-5 at half-time.
The Saints reduced the deficit to 13-10 with a penalty from Dan Biggar early in the second half, and they took the lead for good when Fraser Dingwall crossed in the 68th minute.
Munster pushed hard for a late equaliser, but Northampton's defence held firm to secure a famous victory.
The result means that Northampton have now won all three of their pool matches in the Champions Cup, while Munster have lost two of their three.
Northampton will host Munster in the return fixture on January 21, with the winners of the pool likely to qualify for the quarter-finals.
